Local legumes for feeding growing pigs:
The Re-Livestock partner, ADA, has concluded field trials in growing pigs to evaluate the effect of soybean replacement as protein source by legumes of the Mediterranean area.
Peas, lentils and chickpeas have been selected to replace 50 or 100% of protein from soybean in the diet. The experiments have been conducted in two batches involving more than 500 pigs during their growing phase.
Growth, feed efficiency, nutrient digestibility and parameters of gut health have been monitored. The data is being reviewed and analysed to produce a general report on the results obtained. The conclusions derived from of these studies in conjunction with the rest of trials developed by other partners will provide a set of valuable knowledge for reducing the carbon footprint associated to pig feeding.
