2025 | WP6: Re-Design of circular systems | Update

Categories News

The WP6 has made substantial progress across multiple tasks within the Re-Livestock project, advancing both technical modelling capabilities and stakeholder engagement tools.

Global Scenario Modelling: PIK has successfully modelled all required global crop and grass production scenarios. WUR has integrated LPJmL harvested carbon data—used as yield inputs—into the circular food system model (CiFoS) for both the baseline and three future scenarios across various climate models. This integration involved building a new input pipeline, updating scenario configurations, and running all nine global CiFoS simulations. These results are now under evaluation and will be refined for the final deliverable in Summer 2025.

Scenario Development: In-depth interviews with all relevant work package representatives have been completed, providing valuable insights for shaping mitigation and adaptation scenarios within CiFoS. Next steps include selecting key practices for simulation and finalising these into implementable scenarios. These will be discussed with WP leaders at the upcoming General Assembly in Valencia (Autumn 2025).

Spatial Downscaling: FiBL is continuing to develop its spatial downscaling approach for CiFoS nutrient output variables. Soon, outputs on animal numbers and excretion by type and country will be shared, enabling FiBL to test and improve its workflow. FiBL has already produced detailed baseline maps of livestock distribution in Europe to support downscaling efforts and population estimates for custom areas such as watersheds. The next phase involves creating predictive models for livestock distribution in data-sparse regions and under future climate conditions.

Stakeholder Engagement through Gaming: The CiFoS game was successfully piloted during the General Assembly in Edinburgh (October 2024). Participants provided valuable feedback, especially on enhancing the representation of livestock within the game. The updated version, incorporating this feedback and new game dynamics, will be played again at the GA in Valencia. In the longer term, WP6 aims to engage stakeholders from the livestock sector in playing the game as an innovative outreach and co-creation tool.

WP6 continues to play a critical role in bridging modelling, scenario development, and stakeholder engagement—contributing significantly to Re-Livestock’s broader objectives on climate mitigation and sustainable livestock systems.
