2025 | WP7: Re-Map a roadmap for transition | Update

Categories News

In recent months, the WP7 has successfully submitted its work on developing scenarios for the future of European livestock farming systems, known as the Eur-LFS-SSPs. These scenarios were co-produced in collaboration with stakeholders from across Europe and reflect a range of plausible futures for the sector.

Following the structure of the Shared Socio-Economic Pathways (SSPs), the five Eur-LFS-SSPs are organised around two key dimensions:

  • Challenges for climate change adaptation
  • Challenges for climate change mitigation

The five scenarios are titled:

  1. European Livestock Farming Systems in a Sustainable Era
  2. European Livestock Farming Systems in an Established Era
  3. European Livestock Farming Systems in a Self-Sufficient Era
  4. European Livestock Farming Systems in an Unequal but Green Era
  5. European Livestock Farming Systems in an Innovative but Fossil-Fueled Era

Each scenario outlines potential developments across 80 scenario elements, which are grouped into five thematic areas:

  • Population & Urbanization
  • Policies & Institutions
  • Economy
  • Technology
  • Environment & Natural Resources

These detailed scenarios provide a rich framework for exploring how livestock farming systems in Europe might evolve under varying social, political, and environmental conditions. The full results are documented in Deliverable 7.1, contributing significantly to the strategic foresight work of Re-Livestock.
